The Ups and Downs of Life

The Ups and Downs of Life

In the vast open air
we are climbing up Le Suchet,
near the Swiss border.
Back home, in stuffy carehomes,
old women are trying
to get up out of their seats.

At the summit there are
hang-gliders hanging about in mid-air.
In the lounges of residential homes
people are lounging about in old chairs.

We see cowslips, bluebells, orchids
by our own footsteps.
They see each others’ faces
in the same seats.
We watch curlews and kites,
soaring and swooping.
They watch television,
fixed in the corner.

When I’m back
I’m going to share my stories with them,
bring them flowers,
get them hang-gliding
and swooping about
with wide open cardigans.
