Lunch Room

Lunch Room

Inane conversation
in the lunch room
passes
the hour, distracts
from the stale bread,
rotten tomatoes,
moldy cheese,
and the fear
of the coming
of the second half
of the day.

Conversation on everything
except for particulars
prevent the overwhelming
despair
that is put in the stomach,
brought up to the heart,
from corrupting
the digestive system
and the soul.

These words that are dropped
mindful of nothing
more than the passage
of the minute hand
until the hour
ends in the loss
of the day
that no one wishes
to be reminded of
are caressed
by boney hands.
