Native History

Native History

A red tailed hawk
Floats on an updraft
Receives the rays
Of the sun in his eyes
In a landscape
That cannot write itself,

Its native history
A virgule of cloud
Drifting by
In a raw pattern
Of forgetting
What only we remember--

Mind finally being a quality
Of the landscape we knew
Before anything else
A perennial field
In the shade of a ridge
Exposed red to the air.

We may spend a lifetime
Writing and revising its map
From a place where
Time is long
And undulant and lucid,
A pattern of birdflight
In a black-blue sky.
