Side Effects

You send me a tape
of nature sounds—
stream riffling over rocks,
wind sighing through pines,
birds babbling arcane messages.

I play it for the cat and me
one night abed with a book.

Cat ears twitch, tail quivers,
she sits bolt upright, edgy
with unseen meadowlarks in the room
while I, up to my ears in running water,
rush for the bathroom.
