Something Missing

Judy Kaber

Something Missing

you have stolen too many things from me
at first it was little things
pennies from my bedside table
the sausage i was saving for breakfast
my gnarled and stubby pencils
things anyone could forgive
i’m no fanatic
i understand
some things are habitual
even necessary
I didn’t worry
until later
Things of consequence
began to disappear
my toothbrush
the last four sheets of my writing paper
the key to the house

it broke my stride
i found my days
fallen to pieces with these omissions
either I was too passive
or too polite
now it is too late
you have taken my couch
my curling iron
my favorite cat
and this morning I woke
with both breasts
gone
