Nineteen Eighty

Bourton on the Water

Nineteen Eighty

Here, watching glass,
I saw him before pictures.
I was waiting for a time to speak
but his voice broke the air -
I have never lost myself here
or felt the sleep of song,
I never wanted a future, or space;
I wanted to see the rain fall from leaden skies
and hear a cry above the coins.

Here, watching glass,
I faded a man into prices,
caught his mind in a tangle of fear.
So that was what he had to say,
and he cast an echo after all.
The future is numb beneath soaked concrete:
I would have walked away
but his face was still a sight.
