Her Daily News

Her Daily News

A shadow follows the woman
Whispering, nodding, and laughing
Flourishing by both sun and star
Swift and sudden while she falters.

It delivers with a practiced fling
Her personalized tabloid paper
That lands smack on her head
Or square in her stomach-knot.

She hesitates, not wanting to read
Yet helpless in headline-rubbernecking
Concise, precise tidings of despair
Addictive nuggets of junk-food thought.

DIVORCED MOTHER FAILS AGAIN!
DIET DISASTER, FALLS OFF WAGON!
UNRULY TEEN SON RUNS AWAY!
WHO LET HER OUT LOOKING LIKE THAT?

Someone keeps this messenger employed
With a daily routine of bad tidings
And sets the press for the typeface
In letters half-medieval, half-alien.

She destroys the phantom paper
Defenses trained like guard dogs
Unwilling and perhaps just unable
To see her own name on the masthead.
