CLOSED DOOR

Joanna M. Weston

CLOSED DOOR

If I open the door,
I will catch the bomb,
bury it inside my ears and only I
will hear it explode, only I
will die
in that particular
silence.

If I keep the door shut
death will be outside this room.
I will not know the names scattered
over my garden, letters pulled
onto small stones as markers
for pieces of children.

I open the door,
let the lull into my eyes,
catch the explosion
and am buried under a name
not my own. No one remembers
the smallness under settled dust,
broken bricks.
