The First Bite

The First Bite

Cookery Demo, Doddington Hall

It’s often said, ‘The first bite’s with the eye’
And yes, the sight of steaming pasta, red
Tomato sauce, black olives, crisp salad
Leaves upon the dish is one good reason why
We find our hunger fanned; we salivate.
We see the roast potatoes, gravy poured,
Or view the luscious cheeses on the board:
Can’t wait to have them there upon our plate.
But then, at Doddington, our noses twitched:
It almost seemed that we could smell the taste
As we watched Amy chop, and grind and paste
The produce from the garden, freshly picked,
And mix with spices, herbs… Aromas rose -
Ah, no, we thought, the first bite’s with the nose!
