Hard Drive Blues

Hard Drive Blues

April was not the cruellest month. But May
Not only brought rough chilly winds to shake
Our buds and make the cherry blossom sway
And fall to earth. It also brought a break,
A crash, collapse of the computer’s drive:
My hard drive not quite tough enough, I fear.
Can something be rescued? Would it survive?
The answer not the one I wished to hear.
Often the routine things just get ignored
And I’d not been assiduous enough
In backing up. I had not taken care
To see that everything was safely stored.
Sometimes you find it’s the most trivial stuff
That in the end’s most precious and most rare.

alternative ending:

You put things off; you’re only half aware
Of what might be lost. I had not taken care
To see that everything was safely stored.
Sometimes you find it’s the most trivial stuff
That in the end’s most precious and most rare.
