Sleep

Composed at Milden Gardens, Frimley Green.

Sleep

It’s 4 a.m. I’m playing hide and seek
With an old companion, who keeps
Me guessing, dodging, teasing, playing peek
-a-boo, nearly caught, then gone. Yes, it’s sleep.
It seems when dogs and cats decide to doze,
They do. Birds roost, sheep snooze. None lie awake
Frustrated that, though their eyes are closed,
Their minds work on without a pause or break.
My consciousness is like a metro line
Surfacing at stops, then waiting to depart;
One or two awakenings would be fine
But there’s too many stations on this route.
Then, dawn chorus past, alarm about to sound,
Eyes droop: we tunnel deeply underground….
