Sleep Composed at Milden Gardens, Frimley Green. |
It’s 4 a.m. I’m playing hide and seek With an old companion, who keeps Me guessing, dodging, teasing, playing peek -a-boo, nearly caught, then gone. Yes, it’s sleep. It seems when dogs and cats decide to doze, They do. Birds roost, sheep snooze. None lie awake Frustrated that, though their eyes are closed, Their minds work on without a pause or break. My consciousness is like a metro line Surfacing at stops, then waiting to depart; One or two awakenings would be fine But there’s too many stations on this route.
